NOVA

Nova. A four-legged robot, printed and built from zero.

Design: NOVA SM3 by Chris Locke (novaspotmicro.com). 3MF packaging: Griffin on MakerWorld (CC BY-NC).

Nova is a four-legged robot I'm building from zero on my own bench. Printed bones, twelve servos, two brains. Every part here is real, and so is every failure.

Build stages

Mid-build: legs calibrating, body going together, first power-on still ahead.

  1. 1

    Sort the parts (done)

Lay out covers, frame and feet before building.

  2. 2

    Bench-test the electronics (done)

    Prove every module works first.

  3. 3

Calibrate all twelve servos (in progress)

The stage that protects everything after it.

  4. 4

    Build the legs (in progress)

Four identical legs, three joints each.

  5. 5

    Build the body (in progress)

    Chassis trunk plus shoulder stacks.

  6. 6

    Mount the electronics (in progress)

Everything except the legs lives in the chassis.

  7. 7

    Wire it up (not started)

    Power first, then signals.

  8. 8

    Load the firmware (not started)

    Two boards, two programs.

  9. 9

    First power-on (not started)

    The careful bit.

  10. 10

    Covers on (not started)

Last, once she stands and walks.

What broke

  • Sep 2 Every part came out at 10% infill. Legs got their own profile: 5 walls, 60%.
  • Sep 3 Feet cooked at 240°C. TPU wanted 210. The start code’s purge got clamped.
  • Sep 4 Half a robot. The file ships one of each leg; Nova needs four. Thirteen more hours.
  • Sep 8 A tall cover fell off its supports. Laid it on its biggest face: 128 mm became 31.5 mm.
  • Sep 30 “The left leg looks like a right leg.” The arrows point in. It may have been right all along.
